Taste the Hinterland

Our region is perfect for foodies. And it should be…we have access to some of the best ingredients mother nature can provide. The rich red volcanic soils around the region produce many of the nation's fresh vegetables. Did you know that Bundaberg is the tomato capital of Australia and zucchini, squash, cucumber, capsicum, chilli, sweet potato, strawberries, snow peas and beans grow abundantly. Lychees and melons are summer treats and locally grown pineapples are really sweet. Recent plantings of macadamia nuts mean that the Bundaberg region will shortly be one of the world's largest producers of Australia's native nut. Citrus, grapes and stone fruit come from Mundubbera and Gayndah in the North Burnett. Our avocado is ideal with freshly caught seafood. Our trawlers bring in reef fish, scallops, bugs, prawns and spanner crabs. The muddies (mud crabs) are full of flavour and are irresistible. Meat, pork and beef from the North Burnett are world class. Local herbs add flair to the culinary delights. You can treat yourself to our fresh delights from many roadside stalls dotted throughout the region - so keep some spare change handy.
