About this Event

With design influencing more than 70% of a product's final cost, increased use of design principles across the manufacturing process will help manufacturers:

  • lower costs
  • bring products to market faster
  • be more competitive
  • grow, and
  • employ more Queenslanders.

The Design in Manufacturing Program aims to:

  • raise businesses' awareness of the importance of design in manufacturing
  • highlight the opportunities for advanced manufacturers arising from the use of design and engineering analysis software, new materials and advanced manufacturing techniques in a digitised economy
  • showcase a local manufacturer utilising design for advantage
  • identify sources of advice and information that will strengthen businesses' design capability
  • showcase the benefits of incorporating design principles and practices in manufacturing production and processes.

Since 1993 the Queensland Manufacturing Institute has been committed to ensuring the future growth and prosperity of the Queensland manufacturing community. Representing small, medium and large sized manufacturing businesses across the state we understand the challenges and demands local businesses face, working directly in, and with industry to develop and deliver programs and services designed to develop and grow Queensland’s entire manufacturing industry.

Rob will share his 30 years of industrial design practice to help local manufacturers harness the power of design to transform their businesses. Rob will showcase Australian Design successes, explain the design process and how to harness rewards on investing in design. Rob will also share some useful strategies and provide hands-on training in the use of a key design tool for designers and management to use together.

Local Bundaberg business, Aletek has grown over the past decade to be one of Australia’s leaders in providing innovative solutions for the mining, oil & gas, transport, construction and marine sectors. Aletek design and manufacture tailored heavy duty exhaust systems and noise control solutions for the domestic market with recent expansion into the international market. The business has an inspirational growth story from humble beginnings in a small shared warehouse with their current General Manager working in the business while completing senior schooling to a purpose built manufacturing facility in Bundaberg’s industrial estate.
