North Coast and Central Queensland Regions - Queensland’s program of regional Schools Constitutional Conventions

Who can register?

State, Catholic and Independent schools in the North Coast and Central Queenslandregions may register a team of up-to-five (5) secondary students (Years 7-11) and one (1) school staff memberto participate in Queensland’s program of regional Schools Constitutional Conventions.

Year 11 students studying Legal Studies, Modern History, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander studies or other Humanities subjects are well placed to participate in the program. Regional convention programs also connect with topics studied in junior secondary Humanities subjects such as History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business.

While schools may register for more than one convention, nominated students may attend only one convention.

Note non-state schools incur a nominal fee for team participation.

What is the program about?

Queensland’s program of Schools Constitutional Conventions:

  • educate secondary students about the Australian Constitution and how it guides our democracy

  • provide opportunities for students to engage with speakers presenting perspectives on a constitutional issue and to participate in debates and plebiscites

  • elect Queensland's team of delegates to attend the National Schools Constitutional Convention held in Canberra in March each year.

How is Queensland’s team of delegates to the National Convention selected?

One (1) student from each school team may seek election as a delegate to the National Schools Constitutional Convention.

Students may only nominate once as a candidate for election.

To be elected as a delegate, students deliver a three (3) minute speech at the regional convention. For 2019, the topic is:

Should Australia have a Bill of Rights?

Students must be in Year 11 or 12 at the time of travel to the National Schools Constitutional Convention which is held in March each year.

At each convention an election is conducted to determine the region’sdelegates to the national convention.
