In a major first, the Southern Great Barrier Reef (SGBR) has travelled to Germany to train 150 travel agents and tourism retailers, promoting the spectacular blue skies and warm beaches of the Aussie destination in the middle of the northern hemisphere winter.

The sales mission was made possible following an exclusive invitation from Germany’s largest wholesaler, Best of Travel Group, and the SGBR presented to eleven different companies across fifteen sessions in seven days at the start of December 2017.

On show for Bundaberg were four tourism trade ready operators, Bundaberg Rum Visitor Experience, Kellys Beach Resort, Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, and Lady Musgrave Experience, while Agnes Water / 1770 were represented by 1770 LARC! and 1770Reef, all of whom have undertaken extensive mentoring in Tourism Trade Distribution thanks to Bundaberg North Burnett Tourism (BNBT) and the SGBR partnership.

Germany is the SGBR’s second largest source market, with 26,000 visitors for the year ending September 2017, showing a huge increase of 36.3% year on year.

These figures follow eight years of work and investment by BNBT and their partners in the SGBR marketing initiative, Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) Capricorn Enterprise and Gladstone Area Promotions and Development Ltd.

The SGBR marketing initiative promotes the southern-most 300kms of the Great Barrier Reef throughout Australia and the world in a ground-breaking Queensland partnership that is achieving results akin to those of larger and more established destinations with considerably larger budgets.

Katherine Reid, General Manager of BNBT praised the SGBR partnership, “We are proud of our collective efforts for our region under the marketing banner of Southern Great Barrier Reef and look forward to seeing results from this sales trip for our tourism industry and broader regional economy!”

The SGBR Tourism Trade Distribution program has seen multiple Bundaberg and SGBR tourism operators contracted with Wholesalers and Inbound Tour Operators, as well as a strong presence at the annual Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE), Australia’s key international trade show; major Australian trade missions annually; and participation in Tourism and Events Queensland’s (TEQ) biennial Queensland on Tour expeditions in Europe (January 2015 and January 2017).

Additionally, SGBR continues to host key tourism trade and media to the destination and produces multi-media material including a dedicated website, social media platforms, product manuals and training videos.

The German sales mission was no holiday, with back to back appointments and long days to take in training in Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Trier and Munich.

Sales appointments included:
•    DUSSELDORF: Best of Travel Group presentation to up to 100 retail agents, Boomerang Reisen retail, Explorer Fernreisen headquarters;
•    FRANKFURT, Dertour wholesale, Explorer Fernreisen retail, Tourism Australia, Student Travel (STA) headquarters;
•    TRIER, Boomerang Reisen headquarters; and
•    MUNICH, Boomerang Reisen retail, Pacific Island Travel, Studiosus Reisen, Tourism and Events Queensland office, Australian Outback Tours (including FTI and STA), Explorer Fernreisen retail, Australia Plus Reisen.

In another win for the Bundaberg region, key trade ready local business Kelly’s Beach Resort has developed packages targeted at the German market, along with Lady Musgrave Experience, Bundaberg Rum and Fraser Island with ‘Fraser, Reef and Rum’ and ‘Beach, Reef and Rum’ overnight packages featured in the Boomerang Reisen 18/19 Australian brochure.
