Rising 200 metres above the surrounding countryside, Coalstoun Lakes is home to Mount Le Brun, an extinct volcano featuring two large craters that form shallow lakes. Created more than 600,000 years ago, the mountain is one of the youngest volcanic formations in Australia.
Protected by Coalstoun Lakes National Park, the lakes were named after Coalstoun in Scotland by Wade Brun, manager of nearby Ban Ban Station. The area is a wonderful destination for nature lovers and birdwatchers, with visitors able to park at the base of the mountain and make their way to the crater rim for spectacular views across the surrounding rural landscape.
