Situated just off the road to Bargara, The Hummock is a low-lying volcanic remnant that rises 96 metres above sea level and offers sweeping views across the Bundaberg Region. Look east to the coastline and west to patchworks of sugar cane fields, with the Bundaberg Distillery and mill stacks visible on the horizon. Time your visit right and you can watch the moon rise over the ocean as the sun sets across the landscape.
The Hummock also holds deep cultural significance for the Taribelang Bunda people, the Traditional Owners of the area, who know this place as Woongarra. Their “burning mountain” is today’s Sloping Hummock.
While you’re there, take a moment to view the large Aboriginal art mural at the site depicting the story of Paddy’s Island and the conflicts that occurred during the early period of European settlement. The island can still be seen from the lookout, connecting visitors to both the landscape and its rich history.
