Stories Written in Sugar, Sea and Soil
From ancient cultures to rum barrels and riverbanks, Bundaberg’s story runs deep.
This is a place shaped by First Nations custodians, built on hard work, and layered with stories you can still walk through today. Wander the streets, step inside historic buildings, and you’ll find a region that doesn’t just remember its past, it lives it.
Ancient Country
living culture
Long before Bundaberg was mapped or named, this land was home to the Taribelang Bunda, Gooreng Gooreng, Gurang and Bailai peoples. Their deep connection to Country shaped the landscapes, waterways and seasonal rhythms that still define the region today.
These stories are not relics of the past, they are living, breathing culture. From coastal plains to river systems, this region provided abundant food, shelter and spiritual connection for thousands of years. Today, that connection continues through storytelling, cultural experiences and a growing recognition of Bundaberg’s First Nations heritage as the foundation of everything that came next.

To rum city
Bundaberg’s modern story kicked off in the late 1860s, when timber-getters and settlers arrived, drawn by the fertile land and the Burnett River. What followed was rapid growth, powered by agriculture and ambition.
By the 1870s, sugarcane transformed the region into one of Australia’s most productive agricultural hubs, laying the groundwork for mills, refineries and, eventually, the iconic rum industry that still defines Bundy today.
This era built the bones of the city you see now. Wide streets, grand public buildings and heritage facades reflect a time of prosperity and progress. But it’s also a story with complexity, shaped by the labour of South Sea Islanders and the challenges of floods, industry shifts and resilience over time.
Today, that legacy lives on in everything from historic streetscapes to museums, distilleries and story walks that bring Bundaberg’s past into the present.
