You’ve heard of island hopping, but beach hopping? That’s more our speed. Along Bargara and the Coral Coast, you’ll find some of the best beaches in Bargara, from calm swimming spots to surf breaks and hidden gems. Here’s where to go, what to expect, and which beach suits your kind of day.
Where are you dropping your towel?
- Oaks Beach – blink-and-you’ll-miss-it local secret
- Elliott Heads – river meets ocean (and things get fun)
- Bargara Beach – cafés, swims and easy holiday energy
- Woodgate Beach – long, quiet, and gloriously uncrowded
- Kelly’s Beach – calm water and family-friendly days
ELLIOTT HEADS
Where river meets ocean, Elliott Heads is a local favourite just 15 minutes from Bundaberg.
Expect wide sandy beaches, clear blue water and steady winds that make it ideal for kite surfing and jet skiing. Prefer something calmer? Swim in the protected river mouth or explore rock pools along the shoreline (best found at low tide)
Local Tip: Pack a kite for the kids or a beach-side picnic to enjoy after your swim.
BARGARA BEACH
At the section of all the action sits Bargara.
Bargara brings the beaches, the cafés, the ocean views—and yes, the dangerously good post-swim coffee. Do it properly: sunrise walk, quick dip, then straight into brekkie like you’ve earned it.
With playgrounds, BBQ spots and easy swimming, it’s one of the best beaches in Bargara for families… and anyone who likes their beach day with snacks close by.
Local Tip: Stop into the plentiful farm-gate honesty boxes as you drive into Bargara and have your pick at fresh juicy watermelons, flowers and more!
WOODGATE BEACH
If crowds aren’t your thing, Woodgate Beach is calling. Sixteen kilometres of sand means you don’t need to share. Set up, stretch out, and stay a while. The water’s calm, the vibe’s slow, and the only schedule is “when’s lunch?”
Bring a paddleboard, a book, or absolutely nothing at all.
KELLY’S BEACH
This one’s a crowd-pleaser, and for good reason.
Calm water, easy snorkelling, shady picnic spots and plenty of room for a kick of the footy. It’s the kind of place where the kids stay busy and the adults actually get to sit down for five minutes. Not guaranteed, but we like your chances.
OAKS BEACH
Blink and you might miss it, but that’s part of the charm. Oaks Beach is a small, tucked-away stretch of beach just outside Bargara. Best at low tide for rock pooling, or high tide for a quick dip. Either way, it’s quiet, simple and a bit of a local secret.
Fun fact: It’s man-made. Yep, locals built their own beach because when farmers are in need of a nice quiet place to swim among the rocky coastline, they said ‘let’s build a bit more protection, cause that’s just what you do around here.
Note: Watch your step around rocks and currents. It’s patrolled on weekends only.
MOORE PARK BEACH
If you like your beaches big, Moore Park Beach delivers. We’re talking 20 kilometres of sand, so there’s plenty of room to spread out, throw up the umbrella and settle in for the day. Swim between the flags in summer, cast a line, or bring the dog along for a run.
Low effort, high reward.
COONARR BEACH
A little rough around the edges, but in a good way. Coonarr is where you go when you want to feel like you’ve found something. It’s quiet, a bit wild, and perfect for a walk, a surf or just switching off for a while. You’ll need a 4WD to access and a sense of adventure. Pups are allowed for extra company.
Bring snacks. You won’t want to rush it.
NIELSON BEACH
Right at the northern end of Bargara, Nielson Beach and Nielson Park keeps things easy.
Palm-lined paths, shady picnic spots, playgrounds, skate park, and water that suits both swimmers and surfers. Close enough for a quick stop, good enough to turn into an afternoon.
This one’s for everyone. For beach access support, check in with the Bundaberg Surf Lifesaving Club or time your visit with a U-Beach: Universal Beach ACcess Hub Community Beach Day Out, when adaptive equipment helps more people get in the water.
