Accessible & INCLUSIVE Tourism

Accessible tourism empowers everyone to engage in tourism experiences with confidence and without boundaries. As defined by Tourism Australia, accessible tourism is the ongoing endeavour ensuring destinations, products, and services are accessible to all, regardless of physical limitations, disabilities, or age. Inclusive tourism takes this further by creating environments that actively welcome and accommodate people of all backgrounds and abilities, ensuring travellers feel comfortable and included.

Queensland’s Year of Accessible Tourism underscores the importance of accessible tourism for everyone, driving meaningful change within our industry. To support this, the Queensland Government has allocated $12 million in funding to empower small and medium-sized tourism and event businesses to better accommodate visitors of all abilities. These initiatives will not only increase participation but also lay the foundation for Brisbane 2032 to be the world’s most accessible and inclusive sporting event.

With 1 in 5 Australians living with a disability, making your tourism business accessible is not just the right thing to do—it’s also a smart business move. By embracing accessibility, you’re opening your doors to a wider audience, boosting your bottom line, and positioning your business in line with Queensland as a state that champions inclusivity and innovation.

BUNDABERG REGION INCLUSIVE TOURISM LEGACY BUILDING PROJECT

Team BT are excited to introduce the Bundaberg Region Inclusive Tourism Legacy Building project, an initiative of Bundaberg Tourism awarded through the Queensland Government’s Accessible Tourism Elevate Fund - Access Project Grant. As we take this next step in building our region's legacy as a truly inclusive destination, providing authentic, accessible and transformative visitor experiences for all, the following opportunities for industry will be delivered and available for members to tap into over the coming months.

  • Industry Training - Introducing Accessible & Inclusive Tourism and exploring Accessible Events with GetAboutAble.
  • Development of sixteen (16) operator audio guides to create immersive experiences and increase access to perceptible travel information for people of all abilities.
  • Creation of an Accessible Destination Visitor Guide which will be a central source of information for visitors with accessibility overviews of tourism business across the region.
  • Delivery of an immersive and all-inclusive sensory event in region to grow awareness of our accessible offerings and inclusive destination experiences for the community and visitors alike.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS FOR QLD'S TOURISM INDUSTRY

Inclusive tourism ensures that everyone can fully participate in travel experiences by creating welcoming environments for people with all abilities. People with access requirements encompass various groups, such as parents with prams, seniors with mobility needs, and individuals with disabilities—whether permanent or temporary, spanning physical, sensory, intellectual, or neurological challenges.

Value of Accessible Tourism

THE BENEFITS

Making your products or services more accessible to visitors opens up the opportunity for your business to reach new and valuable markets.

Did you know in 2021 Tourism Research Australia’s National Visitation Survey recorded travel groups including people living with a disability or long-term health condition in Australia accounted for $13.5 billion (17% of total) domestic day and overnight trips!? For context, the inbound China market in 2019 was worth $2 billion to Australia.

With approximately 18% of Australians (that’s 4.4 million people) living with a disability, 22% (or 5.5million) living with a long-term health condition*, and an ageing population, there is a growing need for more enriching and inclusive visitor experiences and by improving your experience offering to be more inclusive, you’re creating a greater opportunity to attract a wider visitor market.

VISITORS WHO BENEFIT FROM IMPROVED ACCESS

  • People with physical disability for example, people who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters, people who use a walking frame or crutches, or people who have difficulty with finger or hand coordination

  • Those with temporary needs, mobility issues or medical conditions

  • People with vision impairment

  • People with hearing impairment or who are deaf

  • People with a perceptual or cognitive disability that affects communication

  • Carers of people with disability

  • People with prams and strollers

  • Overseas visitors for whom English is not their first language seeking easy-to-access information

  • The elderly
