Destination 2045: A Bold Vision for Queensland and a Catalyst for Regional Potential

The launch of Destination 2045 marks a pivotal moment for Queensland’s visitor economy, and for regions like Bundaberg and the Southern Great Barrier Reef, it’s a welcome signal of confidence in our ability to deliver globally competitive, locally grounded tourism experiences. And we’re excited!

This strategy recognises that cutting through green and red tape isn’t about lowering standards, it’s about elevating outcomes. By reducing unnecessary barriers, Destination 2045 paves the way for well-managed businesses to showcase our natural assets and deliver exceptional visitor experiences with greater ease, creativity, and agility.

We’re particularly excited by the strategy’s strong emphasis on:
- Ecotourism and nature-based experiences that protect, educate, and inspire
- Product and experience development that enhances what’s uniquely Queensland
- First Nations-first principles, ensuring cultural integrity and genuine inclusion
- Innovation in tourism, from digital tools to climate-conscious design
- Sustainably funded RTOs, empowered to support industry, capability-building, and experience curation at the regional level

Here in the Bundaberg and Southern Great Barrier Reef region, we see this strategy as more than a vision, it’s a permission slip to dream bigger. From the Southern Great Barrier Reef to our abundant farmland, from mountain bike trails of the North Burnett to heritage streetscapes of Childers, our region is primed to lead in delivering the kind of transformational, purpose-driven experiences that Destination 2045 calls for.

Bundaberg Tourism was proud to contribute to the development of Destination 2045 through a detailed submission that highlighted regional opportunities in ecotourism, visitor experience innovation, sustainable investment, and the critical role of local infrastructure and capability-building. You can explore our full submission here, alongside the state-wide strategy here.

We look forward to working alongside government, industry, and our community to turn this strategy into reality — together shaping a visitor economy that’s bold, balanced, and built to last.
