Top 10 Picnic Spots In The Bundaberg Region

Picnic basket? Check. Good company? Check. Now all that’s left is finding the perfect spot to roll out the rug. From coastal lookouts and lush gardens to peaceful countryside hideaways, discover 10 of the best picnic spots in Bundaberg and the North Burnett.

THE HUMMOCK

Rising from the rich red soils of the Bundaberg Region, The Hummock is a low-lying volcanic remnant with seriously good views. Standing 96 metres above sea level, it’s the perfect spot to roll out the picnic rug and crack open the snacks. Then, let the scenery do the talking. Take in views across the Coral Coast, patchwork farmland, sugar cane fields and Bundaberg city. For something extra special, time your visit for sunset. Play a game of “spot the landmark” and look for the iconic Bundaberg Rum Distillery on the horizon.

CHRISTEN PARK BARGARA

When it comes to family picnics by the sea, Christensen Park ticks all the boxes. Roll out the rug, kick a ball around or let the kids loose on the playground while the grown-ups soak up the ocean views. Afterwards, wander down to nearby Bargara Beach or The Basin for a splash. With sea breezes, green space and plenty of room to play, don’t be surprised if your picnic stretches well into the afternoon.

KELLYS BEACH

Just minutes from Bargara Esplanade, Kellys Beach is an easy pick for a picnic by the sea. Find a shady spot at Crawford Park, unpack lunch and enjoy the sea breeze, with easy access to the beach when you’re ready for a dip. Or settle in beside the calmer waters of the Causeway, roll out the rug and make an afternoon of it.

PALMERS CREEK PARK

Looking for somewhere a little less crowded? Head to Palmers Creek at Innes Park and pick your perfect picnic spot among the shaded trees. Relax and soak up the peaceful surrounds with nothing but the creek as your backdrop. This secluded picnic area is a local favourite for couples and families, especially where the creek meets the ocean at low tide.

BUNDABERG BOTANIC GARDENS

Picnic among the greenery at the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens, with plenty of room to roll out the rug and settle in for a laid-back lunch. Afterwards, wander the winding paths through the Japanese and Chinese gardens and keep an eye out for local wildlife along the way. The kids can burn off some energy at the playground, or step inside Hinkler Hall of Aviation and discover the incredible story of Bundaberg-born aviation pioneer Bert Hinkler.

ALEXANDRA PARK

Swap the beach for riverside views at Alexandra Park, where you can settle in under a covered picnic area while the kids make the most of the playground. Then wander through the free Alexandra Park Zoo and say hello to dingoes, emus, birds, snakes and more. Don’t feel like packing the picnic basket? No worries. Grab takeaway from one of Bundaberg’s nearby cafés and enjoy lunch overlooking the Burnett River.

MOORE PARK BEACH

From picnics on the sand to undercover tables and spacious parks, Moore Park Beach offers an ideal picnic area for those wanting to escape. Travel up the beach towards Ray Townson Park or choose to sit in the shade at Lions Park or Malvern Drive Park for your picnic getaway.

BALDWIN SWAMP ENVIRONMENTAL PARK

Bird lover or just happiest in the great outdoors? Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park is the perfect place to stretch your legs before settling in for a picnic. Follow the walking tracks, boardwalks and pathways through the wetlands, keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife along the way. Then, make your way to the Scotland Street entrance, where picnic tables offer the perfect spot to unpack lunch and relax after your walk.

ELLIOTT HEADS

Find your patch of paradise at Elliott Heads. Choose a spot on the sand or roll out the rug on the grassy foreshore overlooking the ocean. Then, crack open a good book and settle in for a lazy afternoon. Don’t feel like packing lunch? Grab some fish and chips from the takeaway right there and enjoy them by the water. Plus, there’s a skate park to keep the kids entertained. Afterwards, cool off with a splash in the water.

CANIA GORGE NATIONAL PARK

Pack the picnic basket and make a day of it at Cania Gorge National Park. Set among dramatic sandstone cliffs and peaceful bushland, it’s a great spot to pair lunch with a little exploring. Settle in at one of the sheltered picnic tables near Three Moon Creek, then stretch your legs on a nearby walking trail. Before you head off, pack your lunch and snacks in reusable containers and remember to take all rubbish home with you.
