Crisis Response Resources
SUPPORTING YOU IN ALL WEATHER
Manage and develop a crisis response plan in relation to a serious event – perceived or real – that has the potential to impact negatively on the desirability or reputation of the Bundaberg North Burnett Region as a tourist destination in the immediate or short-term.
Role of Bundaberg Tourism (BT)
Bundaberg Tourism plays a coordinating and supporting role before, during, and after a crisis.
We work to:
- Prepare, respond, and recover across the tourism sector
- Act as a trusted link between industry and emergency agencies
- Provide timely updates and communications support
- Help align messaging across operators and stakeholders
- Support regional recovery marketing and destination confidence
- Collaborate with TEQ, QTIC, councils, and emergency services
Our goal is simple: keep visitors safe, keep industry informed, and help the region recover quickly and confidently.
IMPORTANT SOURCES
Social media during disruption
If your business is active on social media during a crisis event, consistency and calm communication matter most.
Review scheduled content
Pause or reschedule posts that may appear insensitive or out of step with current conditions (for example, sunny beach imagery during severe weather events).
Lead with empathy and facts
Acknowledge disruption honestly, respond calmly, and avoid speculation or opinion.
Stay in your lane
Share verified updates from official agencies rather than creating your own crisis information.
Offer alternatives where possible
If visitors are impacted, highlight indoor, wet-weather, or alternative experiences where appropriate.
Example responses:
- “We know today’s weather has changed your plans. Here are some great indoor experiences still open across the region.”
- “If your booking has been impacted, our team is here to help with refunds or rescheduling.”
Messaging principles during a crisis
Clear communication protects both visitors and the reputation of the region.
Facts first, people first
Confirm details through official channels before sharing. Prioritise the safety of guests, staff, and community.
Stay connected with Bundaberg Tourism (BT)
We will support coordination of messaging, provide updates, and help ensure alignment across industry and agencies.
Stay steady and consistent
Calm, clear communication builds confidence. The way we respond shapes how visitors perceive the region during and after an event.
Recovery and “open for business” messaging
Once the immediate event has passed, focus shifts to confidence, recovery, and return visitation.
Show the region at its best
- Bright, positive imagery (clear skies, open spaces, smiling people)
- Short captions that signal readiness and welcome
Make it easy to return
- Clear “open” messaging
- Simple updates on access, transport, and business availability
- Direct calls to action like “Plan your return visit” or “We’re open and ready”
Tell the recovery story
- Share real moments of reopening and resilience
- Highlight community effort and local pride
- Repost visitor content where appropriate
