Mon Repos
Beach days, turtle ways
There are beaches, and then there’s Mon Repos, where turtles outrank tourists and the sunrises hit different. This 6km stretch of coastline is part of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, but we call it “turtle HQ.”
TURTLES, TURTLES,
Turtles!
From October to May, the beach turns into a maternity ward for nesting and hatching turtles. It’s closed off to give the little ones their big debut and people flock from across Australia to join a ranger-led Mon Repos Turtle Encounter from November to March and watch nature pull off the cutest all-nighter imaginable.
Once the mummas and hatchlings have packed up for the season, Mon Repos switches back into all-beach mode, calm waters, soft sand, a space to swim, sail, or laze the day away.
Fun fact: Local legend Bert Hinkler once launched himself off these dunes over a century ago, because even back then, Bundy was full of people who looked at something amazing and said, “yeah, I reckon I can top that.”
