Creativity among the hinterlands

A lover of art and culture, Sarah Gulam found herself surrounded by creativity among the rolling hills and breathtaking sweeping views of the hinterland town, Childers.

Drawn to the friendly locals and relaxed lifestyle, Sarah made the move from the hustle and bustle of Victoria to relaxing Queensland just a few short years ago. However, what Sarah didn’t know at the time was that the quaint town of Childers resembled the Melbourne art scene in more ways than she had ever thought.

Always finding the beauty in originality and imagination, Sarah’s passion for the art world sparked in the graffiti laced streets of Melbourne. So when the opportunity arose to work in the local art world at the Childers Art Space, Sarah couldn’t have been more thrilled.

Sarah still remembers the very first time she stepped inside the gallery. Mesmerized by the works on the crisp white walls, it was this moment she truly felt at home. A hub for local artists to showcase the works they are so passionate about; the Childers Art Space is a true representation of the colour and diversity of the regional art scene. Hosting a number of exhibitions a year, the devoted team members spend their days sharing the stories behind the artworks to fascinated visitors.

However, it was not only the creativity that took Sarah’s breath away. Twenty years ago, in the very building the gallery is housed, arson tragically took the lives of fifteen backpackers. Seeing how beautifully the backpackers are honoured at the Palace Backpacker Memorial and how the artwork immortalizes their lives inside the gallery, is a moment that has stayed with Sarah ever since.

Come meet the team from the Childers Art Space on your next getaway and take in the art world that inspired a passionate art lover.

Hi,
I was wondering if the Palace Backpacker Memorial is open again to the public. We spent a week in the region about 2 months ago & found the memorial closed due to Covid.Looking forward to travelling up there again.
