Where our food comes from

The iconic rich red soil and near perfect year-round conditions make the Bundaberg and North Burnett region the ideal place for a food lover’s paradise. Taste food next to where it has been grown just hours after it has been picked or caught and let the flavours dance in your mouth to a symphony of freshness – that’s the Bundaberg North Burnett Food experience!

Did you know that Bundaberg is the tomato and macadamia capital of Australia and zucchini, squash, cucumber, capsicum, chilli, sweet potato, strawberries, snow peas and beans all grow abundantly? Lychees and melons are summer treats and locally grown pineapples are really sweet. Our trawlers bring in reef fish, scallops, bugs, prawns and spanner crabs unlike any seen elsewhere. The muddies (mud crabs) are full of flavour and hard to resist. Meat, pork and beef from the North Burnett are world class, while local herbs add flair to locally created culinary delights. 

The Bundaberg district produces a significant percentage of Queensland’s sugar crop. Throughout the year the green mosaic of fields changes as the crop matures and is harvested. Bundaberg is unique in Australia as it is the only place where the entire range of sugar production activities occur – growing, milling, refining, research, distilling and tasting! 

In the North Burnett the rich river flats with an inland climate, grow some of Australia’s citrus supply. Mundubbera and Gayndah in the North Burnett produce the juiciest citrus, grapes and stone fruit, a perfect addition to any fruit bowl. Locally grown avocado is the perfect accompaniment to our freshly caught seafood. High quality beef and pork is also produced in the region. 

With the exception of the region’s big brands most of your food journey will be a journey of exploration down side roads looking for farm gate stalls filled with fresh seasonal produce and visiting local shops and cafes to experience what fresh really tastes like. Please make sure you have plenty of change on hand before you set off on farm gate journey, as most roadside stalls work off an honesty system.
