Reef water, zero crowds and a cold one with your name on it? Say less.
Just north of Brisbane, Bundaberg and the Southern Great Barrier Reef is where holidays feel easy again. Less rush, more room to move, and plenty of reasons to stay longer than planned. From island escapes to top-shelf sips and farm-fresh feasts, here’s your guide to planning the ultimate getaway on the Southern Great Barrier Reef that actually delivers.
THINGS TO DO
If the Southern Great Barrier Reef has been sitting on your bucket list, here’s your shortcut to nailing it as your next getaway.
At the southern tip, right off Bundaberg, you’ll find Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island. Same world-famous reef, just without the crowds and elbowing for space. Think crystal-clear water, thriving coral, and wildlife encounters that feel a little bit surreal.
It’s closer than most people realise, meaning less travel time and more time actually being on the reef. And once you’re here, the pace shifts. There’s no rush, no packed itineraries, just wide open space, fresh air, and plenty of pinch-me moments.
LADY ELLIOT ISLAND ECO RESORT
A trip to Lady Elliot Island is where things get properly memorable. Known as the home of the manta ray, this little coral cay delivers big on underwater experiences. Slip into the lagoon, and you’ll find yourself swimming alongside turtles, rays and schools of fish that don’t seem remotely bothered by you being there. Stay the night if you can. Sunrise and sunset out here hit differently.
DISCOVER LADY MUSGRAVE ISLAND
If you’re up for a day out on the water, Lady Musgrave Island is another standout. The journey out feels like part of the adventure, and once you arrive, the calm lagoon makes it ridiculously easy to snorkel straight into reef life. Whether you’re diving in or just floating around, taking it all in, it’s the kind of place that makes you forget what day it is.
MACADAMIAS AUSTRALIA VISITOR EXPERIENCE
Back on land, Bundaberg’s paddock-to-plate scene is worth leaning into. At Macadamias Australia Visitor Experience, you can wander through orchards, hear the story behind the farm and taste your way through more macadamia combinations than you knew existed. It’s equal parts laid-back and genuinely interesting, and yes, the macadamia coffee is worth it.
VISIT THE HOME OF BUNDABERG GINGER BEER
For something different yet packed with flavour, head to The Bundaberg Barrel. Dive into one of Australia’s most iconic drink brands with a bit of nostalgia, and refreshingly fun flavours. Test your senses at the smellography wall, and work your way through the full tasting line-up. Once you’ve cracked the ingredients, sample them at the tasting bar with a guided tasting experience.
MON REPOS TURTLES
If your timing is right (November to March), Mon Repos Turtle Centre offers one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in the region. It’s home to the only ranger-guided turtle encounters on Australia’s east coast.
Watching hatchlings make their way to the ocean or seeing nesting turtles on Mon Repos beach is a moment that stays with you long after your visit.
Outside of turtle season, the centre continues to focus on conservation, offering interactive experiences that explore marine life and the ongoing protection of these incredible animals.
AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE SPIRIT
For something with a stronger finish, the Bundaberg Rum Visitor Experience is a must.
Take a guided tour through the history, craft, and barrel house of this iconic distillery before finishing with a tasting that might just convert you into a rum fan if you aren’t already.
